Rockford's Rock Opera Review

Rockford's Rock Opera is the creation of sweetapple, it is an ecological musical story aimed at children between the ages of 6 -12 which is not self produced but self financed too.

It was first launched in the web in 2009 as an enhanced audiobook and has since gone on to captivate millions of children and parents across the world. In 2012 Sweetapple worked alongside Steve Punt (respected BBC writer and performer) to launch the story as an app which can be be bought on iTunes or android.

Over 50,000 schools actually use the story in class as an educational tool.

The girls and I were sent codes to download the 4 chapters on to our iPad and we were also sent a DVD of these same chapters to view on our TV.

The story is about a boy from Battersea called Moog and his dog, Rockford.

Far away from Battersea is the Island of Infinity, it is the home to the last one of every extinct species, they have a secret to tell the world but the only person able to deliver this message is Moog. When Moog and Rockford travel to the Island of Infinity, they are drawn into and exciting adventure.

The girls were captivated right from the beginning. The mixture of songs, sound effects and story telling had them spell bound. You can see from the pictures below that the more they got into it, the closer they got to the iPad.

I really liked that at times the words to the songs came on the screen, the girls had fun attempting to sing along. I was also able to ask them questions as they watched, making sure they were understanding what they were viewing, it is certainly thought provoking as I think the threat of extinction isn't something that the younger generation tend to know much about.

I can see why it has managed to reach such a wide audience. It was refreshing to see something a little different to the norm, there were moments of sadness, of laughter, of craziness, a good mix of emotions to keep you on your toes.

Part one is available as a free app on both iTunes and Google Play and parts 2, 3 and 4 are £2.99 each. Well worth the money in my opinion as it provides ours of entertainment.

Disclaimer : I was sent the DVD and codes to download the apps free of charge however all thoughts and opinions are my own.
