The Twelve Dancing Princesses Book Review

I'm a sucker for a classic fairy tale and I really enjoy reading them with my children as my mum did with me when I was younger. I was recently asked to review The Twelve Dancing Princesses and what a gorgeous edition it is.

Every morning the king's twelve daughters need twelve new pairs of shoes. But why? The man who unravels this enchanted riddle will be the next king and have his choice of the princesses for his bride. After so many have failed, can a soldier from far away discover the princesses' secret before his time runs out?

This is a retelling of the classic Brothers Grimm fairy tale. Retold by Jon Cech and illustrated by Lucy Corvino, it is lovely book to introduce to younger generations.

I would say it is more suited to children aged 8 and upwards as there is quite a lot of text to read and it isn't broken down into chapters so may become a bit tedious for slightly younger readers.

The illustrations really are beautiful, looking more like painting, they definitely add a more detailed element to the story itself.

Here is what my 8 year old daughter had to say about the story :

I really enjoyed reading about the princesses. My favourite part was when the soldier and the eldest princess got married, she looked really pretty in the picture. It was a really nice story which I'm going to read again!

This edition of The Twelve Dancing Princesses is priced at £5.99 and is definitely a fairy tale worth introducing your kids to if you haven't already. I mean who doesn't love a happily ever after!?

  1. I vaguely remember reading this story as a child but I can't remember all the details! I'd like to read it again now to solve the riddle!

  2. I don't know this fairytale at all, but it looks beautiful! I instantly thought of my niece with the new pairs of shoes - she's a little diva who would happily have new shoes every day! As she's only 3, she will have to wait a bit longer for this book!

  3. I'm sure that there is a Barbie film based on this book which my daughter loves. I'll have to see if I can get her a copy of this book as I know she'll love it

  6. I used to love reading fairy stories myself as a child but I don't recall this one. The illustrations love lovely. But sadly not something my boys would go for
