A World Without the Internet?

I've been moaned at quite a few times by Daddy Hazelden for spending far too much time on the internet but after reading a post over on The Oliver's Madhouse about giving yourself a night off social media, I really got thinking about the amount of my daily life that is spent on not only social media, blogging etc but on just the internet itself. I honestly think I would struggle live in a world without the internet.

world wide web
My free moments consist of me writing blog posts and connecting with people via various social media sites. I am that bad that I have been caught tweeting and uploading pics onto instagram when I'm on "date night" with Daddy Hazelden.

I don't know if you noticed that Twitter went down for a few minutes the other night? Well I did and let me tell you it was like I had lost a limb, I didn't know what to do with myself for a moment, I wanted to update everyone with the fact that Twitter wasn't working!!

However when I think about it in more detail, I realised that the internet has become almost an essential in life. I use that world wide web for my banking, paying bills, buying gifts, food shopping, ordering books for my kindle, the list seems to be endless.

It seems silly but I can't remember the times that we didn't have the internet, it has managed to make itself an honoury family member.

Just what would I do without the internet?

I'd have to actually get of that comfy sofa, you know the one with my bum dent in it and take a walk to the shops to buy things.

I'd have to put down my trusty kindle and pick up a real book, remembering to turn the pages as that can't be done with a click of a button.

I might actually have to talk to people face to face, you know, actually make 'real' friends instead of 'virtual' ones.

Would any of these things actually be bad things to do?

Realistically, no.

I guess we just live in a world where change seems scary sometimes but change can be a good thing. I think we could all do with stepping away from the virtual world and enjoying what is right there in front of us sometimes.

Do you think you could live in a world without the internet?

  1. Noooooooo
I really couldn't. 1 day away and my emails are backed.
I limit it while on holiday, no working for instance but I do check my emails at the end of the day if I can once kids are in bed just to keep up to date.
Without the Internet I wouldn't be able to earn my money

  2. I think I'm way too far gone to manage without it! And I actually don't use it for much more than blogging and social media. I do my Tesco order on it, but I don't do my banking or anything else on it. We were without internet for a few days when we were living in the rented house and it drove me crazy. All I had was an intermittent 3G signal on my phone and I actually felt depressed!

  4. I do have to say that at the moment I wish we could all live without the internet for a few days. I wonder if it would make us all better people? And stop people bickering over social media! Thanks for linking to PoCoLo x

    1. I wonder these things too. I think it would do the world good to not rely on technology so much x

  5. I think I definitely could, but I think that we are so lucky to have all of this technology at our fingertips. Its up to us to use it responsibly and in moderation without it affecting real life. Hard to do though!!

  6. I often think I would struggle as, like you, I'm online in most of my spare moments. But when going cold turkey has been enforced, such as when we've been on holiday in wifi-free/poor 3G/4G zones, I've actually found it's not that big a deal for me. It's not some Road to Damascus - I-must-change-the-way-I-live moment, but it's reassuring to know I can switch off occasionally.

  7. I really identify with this! I live on it, too, and use it for everything. However, about 4 times a year I go to stay with my father and have an internet few days. It's kinda nice, peaceful, and I watch stuff on television instead of Netflix, do crosswords, etc. When I first started to write novels internet was in its infancy, and I used to do my research in the library - life is a lot easier now!
