Mary Had a Little Glam

I love books that are a little quirky, a bit different from the norm and this is definitely what you get with Tammi Sauer's latest book Mary Had a Little Glam. Having previously reviewed one of her other books, Chicken Dance, I was expecting good things from her newest story.

Mary had a little glam that grew into a lot. And everywhere that Mary went, she wasn't hard to spot. But on the day she started school she caught some by surprise. Sweet May shrugged and hugged her mom. "I must accessorize."

This was a tale that appealed to my eight year old as she is very much into her clothing and is what I like to call a little fashionista. What begins as a fun take on a classic nursery rhyme turns into something so much more.

Mary is a girl who oozes style and she certainly isn't afraid to stand out from the crowd and as she starts her first day of school, she does so with confidence. Already something lovely being demonstrated, showing kids that actually there is nothing wrong with being different.

As the story continues we are introduced so more well known nursery rhyme characters including Little Bo Peep and Georgie Porgie. Mary decides that her classmates lack a certain amount of glam and goes on to give them all makeovers, even the classroom pet gets a bit of glitz injected on him in the shape of a rather stylish top hat.

The trouble comes when break time arrives. With all the children dressed up to the nines they don't want to ruin their outfits by playing in the muddy playground. What are they going to do? And this is where we learn that sometimes less is more but I will let you read the ending yourself to find out just how Mary solved their dilemma.

A fun and quirky story which is bought to life with Vanessa Brantley-Newton's fantastically stylish illustrations. You can't go wrong with a bit of extra sparkle and glitter in your life.
