What I Read In May

It's the start of another month so time for you to see just what I read in May. The list isn't long, a mix of sunny days spent with family and free time catching up on course work has meant I've not been able to read as much as I'd like but that's not say that I haven't read some brilliant books...

Waiting For a Callback by Perdita Cargill

When Elektra is discovered by an acting agent, she imagines Oscar glory can't be far away, but instead lurches from one cringe-worthy moment to the next! Just how many times can you be rejected for the part of 'Dead Girl Number Three' without losing hope? And who knew that actors were actually supposed to be multi-lingual, play seven instruments and be trained in a variety of circus skills?

Off-stage things aren't going well either - she's fallen out with her best friend, remains firmly in the friend-zone with her crush and her parents are driving her crazy. One way or another, Elektra's life is now spent waiting for the phone to ring - waiting for callback.

I'll be honest my month started off poorly with this book, it just wasn't what I was expecting, it lacked detail and felt like it needed a lot of editing.

A Whole New World (A Disney Twisted Tale) by Liz Braswell

disney-twisted-tales

When Jafar steals the Genie’s lamp, he uses his first two wishes to become sultan and the most powerful sorcerer in the world. Agrabah lives in fear, waiting for his third and final wish.To stop the power-mad ruler, Aladdin and the deposed Princess Jasmine must unite the people of Agrabah in rebellion. But soon their fight for freedom threatens to tear the kingdom apart in a costly civil war.

What happens next? A Street Rat becomes a leader. A princess becomes a revolutionary. And readers will never look at the story of Aladdin in the same way again.

I was excited to start reading the Disney Twisted Tales but after reading this one I would agree with many that they are definitely better suited to children than adults, just not enough within the story to hold my attention properly.

The Perfect Stroke by Jordan Marie

C.C.

Gray Lucas is a bad boy, on and off the green.
As golf's new media darling, his face is plastered on the front of every tabloid in the country.
His exploits are legendary--one of which is me.
We had a one-night-stand, before I knew who he was. It was passionate, wild and exhilarating.
I should forget him. The guy is everything I can't stand – arrogant, entitled, and privileged.
Then he walks into my garage, looking better than I remember, his eyes tempting me with wicked promises.
But I'm not about to let a player like him into my bed again.
Not even if I can't stop thinking about the taste of his lips, his magic fingers, or other parts of his anatomy.

Gray
I work hard. I play harder.
Until my playing causes me to lose my main sponsor months before I’m set to win the biggest tournament of my career.
Now I'm stuck in the middle of nowhere, Kentucky. I need the sponsorship Riverton Metals can provide.
The problem is, my head isn't in the game. I can't stop thinking about the luscious redhead that I only know as CC. We had a one night stand – the best night of my life – but she bolted before I could even get her name.
Imagine my surprise when my car breaks down and the grease monkey under the hood is my dream woman.
She didn't know who I was then, but now that she does, she wants nothing to do with me and my player ways.
She thinks she can resist me.
But I'm about to show her that this player doesn't lose…and that my nine “inch”-iron can deliver the perfect stroke.

A light hearted read, nothing to blow your socks off, the perfect one to be sitting by the pool with on your holidays when you want to switch off.

A Tragic Kind of Wonderful by Eric Lindstrom

How can you have a future if you can’t accept your past?

Mel Hannigan doesn’t have it easy. Mourning the death of her firework of a brother, facing the loss of three friendships that used to mean everything to her and struggling to deal with a condition that even her closest friends don’t know about. To protect herself and everyone else, Mel tries to lock away her heart, to live quietly without pain – but also without hope.

Until the plight of an old friend, and meeting someone new, shows her that the risk is worth taking, that opening up to life – and who you really are – is what can make everything glorious… And that maybe Mel can discover a tragic kind of wonderful of her very own.

I picked this novel as my book of the month last month, you can see my full review but in few words I'll just say this is a must read story, one to change your way of how you look at others and the way you perceive them.

Last Seen by Lucy Clarke

Seven years ago, two boys went missing at sea – and only one was brought to shore. The Sandbank, a remote stretch of coast dotted with beach huts, was scarred forever.

Sarah’s son survived, but on the anniversary of the accident, he disappears without trace. As new secrets begin to surface, The Sandbank hums with tension and unanswered questions. Sarah’s search grows more desperate and she starts to mistrust everyone she knows – and she’s right to.

Someone saw everything on that fateful day seven years ago. And they’ll do anything to keep the truth buried.

This is one cleverly written novel, the twists and turns pull you in and keep you guessing, keep an eye out for my full review later in the month.

Fallen Crest Forever by Tijan

Mason Kade is the dream.
He is the promise.
He’s offering what so many would fantasize about, and it’s not that I don’t want it/him/us.
It’s the opposite.
There might be ghosts haunting me, but this man who's my soulmate is asking me for forever.
How can I say no to someone who already gave me my happily ever after?

This was the last in the Fallen Crest series, I've stuck with this series from the beginning and I'll admit I was sad to see it end as the characters have become like old friends to me, I always looked forward to seeing what they'd be up to next. I'm looking forward to seeing what stories the author comes up with next.

What's everyone average books read in a month, am I being unrealistic thinking I should be reading more? Would genuinely like to know, so do tell me in the comments below.

  1. I am a huge Disney fan but I'm really struggling to read the Twisted Tale books, but I think my kids will love them. You've given me some ideas of things to read, but I need to finish my Year Of Books Challenge first! xx #PoCoLo

  3. I really think it comes down to what your commitments are and how you organise your time. Whether or not you are fast or slow reader too. Of course how big the book is and your enjoyment for it. I've picked up one of the Disney stories from the supermarket and am looking forward to diving into it. #PoCoLo
