Cap'N Rex & His Clever Crew Book Review

It was only last month that I looked at some dinotastic books and this month I have another fantastic story featuring some mischievous pirate dinosaurs.

Captain Rex and his dinosaur pirates sailed the Seven Seas. "Arr. Let's plunder some buried treasure", said Rex. "Aye, Cap'n," bellowed his big buccaneers.

This tale follows Cap'n Rex and his crew of dinosaur pirates as they head out on an adventure to find themselves some treasure. As they sail the Seven Seas their journey sees them navigating through thick fog, keeping moving after a shark attack and avoiding an erupting volcano.

What we learn each time that the dinos get into a spot of bother is that a problem is there to be overcome.

"But we can't dodge those boulders," said Kyle. Rex glared with teeth bared. "Can't ye?"

Cap'n Rex won't be beaten and along with his crew he's quite determined to find treasure regardless of what tries to get in his way, there's always a solution to be found.

This story not only encourages problem solving, thinking outside of the box, it also looks at team work and what can be done when you work together with someone else.

Now I must admit I struggled a little bit with all of the pirate lingo but thankfully for wannabe pirates like me, there is a section at the back of the book which is filled with all those piratey words and their meanings.

What this done was actually expand the learning further as I was able to discuss with my children what other words could possibly replace the ones that had been used.

Over all a quirky story for dinosaur fans, little pirates and any child that loves a good adventure. With a mix of short sentences balanced with silly and exciting illustrations, Cap'n Rex is guaranteed to get your kids smiling.

  1. Sounds nice. I think we've read enough pirate books for my boys to recognise the words, but the glossary is a great idea.

  2. I love the look of these - we need more books to bridge the gap between picture books and chapter books and this looks fab! #readwithme
