The Kiss Book Review

Something I have always tried to in-still in my children is to be kind to others, and the notion that it isn't just achieved by the things you do but by how you act and what you say too. Linda Sunderland's latest picture book, The Kiss goes to show just how far one small act of kindness can travel ...

When Edwyn blows Grandma a kiss, she catches it and puts it in her pocket. The kiss brings smiles, laughter and dancing!

But a rich man wants the kiss all to himself - and he'll do anything to get it!

The story begins with lovely Grandma Edwyn's grandson blowing her a kiss out of the window as she waves goodbye. Immediately the story takes on a certain sort of magic as the kiss is represented by twinkling stars flying through the air, which Edwyn then carefully places into her pocket.

This simple kiss manages to put a smile on Edwyn's face, something small providing a huge amount of positivity.

As this sweet, old lady goes on her merry way she shares this piece of kindness with others who she feels might need it. She shows this kiss to a sad looking old man, this starts spreading not only more smiles but happiness in the form of dance too.

Then another kiss is blown and the enchanting chain, which begun with a little boy, expands further afield.

Edwyn continues her journey and freely offers pieces of the kind kiss to help others in need. This is a great talking point for young children. It showcases how being kind can alter a situation right in that moment, how to transform something seemingly negative into something altogether much better.

But this story isn't all sweetness and light.

An envious man appears at Edwyn's doorstep, he wants that kiss and because he is a wealthy, well off man, he thinks he's simply entitled to it.

However another lesson that little ones will soon learn is that there are some things that money just cannot buy!

One of my children said this of the kiss:

"The Kiss is a really lovely story, it made me smile. I particularly liked the ending because of the hug, cuddles always make me happy!"

This picture book really is heart-warming. It's a story that is filled with beautifully, charming imagery and words that mean an awful lot. Children will come to learn how to think of others and not just themselves, to be more in tune to the little events going on around them and to consider the feelings of others.

They say sharing is caring and The Kiss certainly reflects those words, you would be doing your child/ren a great kindness by sharing this with them.

  4. It sounds lovely, although kisses are now a total no-no as far as my boys are concerned. I wasn't even allowed one for Mother's Day. Did manage a reluctant hug with my youngest but had to settle for a fist bump from my eldest
