Exploring Dover Castle

We are very lucky to have Dover Castle literally 5 minutes away from our home. We are also members of the English Heritage so after paying the initial membership, it means we can visit as many times as we like and it doesn't cost us a penny. It is one of those places that we just love exploring.

Our go to place whenever we take a trip up there is to the Medieval tunnels, the girls love sitting on the cannons whilst Daddy Hazelden tries to scare them as we walk further into the dark.

There is plenty to see as you walk around including the Roman Lighthouse and the Battlement Walks. Last Summer we were able to see live actors as we wandered around the Great Tower and the girls even got to try on armour and hold shields.

I highly recommend that you check out the Secret Wartime Tunnels is you ever happen to visit Dover Castle. It is a chance to learn about the evacuation of Dunkirk, watch real film footage and just get a real feel for the history that surrounds you.

Something we discovered whilst exploring this time round was the Anglo Saxon Church, we had spotted it from a distance before but didn't realise that we could actually go in and walk around.

There is a restaurant and a cafe on site too, great for stopping and refueling, getting you ready for more searching and discovering, I will say the coffee in the cafe is delicious and we all know how much I love caffeine.

It isn't all about the history at Dover Castle though, the views from up there are stunning, especially on a sunny day. You can see the Port of Dover, watch boats travelling to and from France, fantastic photo opportunities.

Dover Castle is a great place to visit, not just for adults but for kids too, we have enjoyed many family trips up there and we manage to find something new to look at/do each time that we go there. It is a great way for your children to learn a little history whilst having fun at the same time!!

  2. It looks like everyone had fun! Our little ones have never visited a Castle yet, i'm sure they would love it. We don't drive at the moment so getting to one is tricky, but it's definitely something we'll do when it's feesable - lots to choose from here in East Anglia! Mummy is going through lessons right now.
