The First Hair Cut

There are a lot of firsts where are kids are concerned and they are all as equally exciting and memorable as the last. All of my children have had their first hair cut very late on. Born bald and with slow growing hair, I never felt the need to even give them a trim and I think I was always reluctant to cut anything off because I hated the fact that everyone always commented "isn't HE lovely", "oh look at HIM, so lovely". Yep even when dressed head to toe in pink they always got mistaken for boys.

But the time came to finally give Layla her first hair cut. Her hair is now resembling the "mullet" style. Not a good look but I adore the tiny curl she has at the back, when pulled straight this one bit trails down her back, unlike the rest of her yet to catch up locks.

Another First is Arriving Soon

I can't believe what I am about to type, I just applied for Gracie to start primary school next September.

I know I have done this two times before but it is still just as exciting and terrifying at the same time. Another one of my baby's is growing up far too quick.

It is already strange enough that I am left with only Layla when the eldest two are at school and Gracie is at playschool, I still haven't got used to having only one child around.

For some reason this time round just feels  a bit different. I think Elise and Freya seemed more ready for school than Gracie does, they always acted older than the age that they actually were.

As a parent I think we always worry when our children are venturing into something new and unknown.

Gracie on the other hand couldn't be more excited. Having been going up the school with us since Elise started, she already recognises a lot of the teachers and can't wait to be a "big girl" like her sister's. So when I told her yesterday that I had sent the forms in, she was extremely happy.

Are any of your children starting school next year??

Just One More Step

So of all the firsts that little ones do, for me, I think learning to walk unaided has got to be one of the most exciting. I like my kids to be on the move.

Now Elise, Freya and Gracie all did things at the exact same time, learning to roll 4 months, learning to crawl 7 months, learning to stand up and cruise 8 months and they were all walking unaided by the age of 10 months.

My little monkey Layla wants to be different, you know she wants to stand out from the crowd!! She rolled at 4 months and that's when she decided to switch it up. She didn't start crawling until she was 9 months old, she had been teasing us on and off since she turned 7 months old, rocking on all fours, cheeky.

However as soon as she learnt to crawl there seemed to be no stopping her, she immediately started pulling herself up and walking around the furniture, I was sure she would be walking soon but of course she had to prove mummy wrong.

One week before her first birthday, we were on our holiday in Ibiza when she did it, she took her first step, we managed to coax her into taking three whole baby steps and that was it.

Since we've come back she hasn't done it again, as you can see from the picture below, she just stands there teasing me, look mum no hands!!!

Although she has added a new trick to her repertoire, the bounce.

When did your children learn to walk?? Which of their first had you most excited??

Keep crawling crawling crawling

I am one very inpatient mummy. Infact I think I am the opposite to a lot of parents. Mum's that I speak to aren't in any hurry to get their little ones moving, I on the other hand cannot wait for mine to get up and go!!

My eldest three daughters all crawled by the time they were 7 months, were pulling themselves up at 8 months, cruising at 9 months and walking by the time they were 10 months. So when Layla started getting on her knees at 6 months I thought she was going to follow in her sister's footsteps, or knee slides maybe, how wrong was I.

Getting on her knees lasted a very short while and then she got lazy. With three old siblings quite willing to get everything for her, pick her up at the slightest whine, she was quite happy to stay put. I've lost count of the amount of times I used the phrase "she is no a doll".

Then suddenly this month, at 9 months, she started experimenting on her knees again, well not publicly, I caught her doing it in her cot. However one very excited mummy started waving things infront of her to encourage her to move to them, keys normally work wonders. It was Daddy Hazelden that finally got the little monkey wobbling forward by waving his chocolate bar around, who knew a Wispa could be so appealing.

Now she still isn't thrilled with the concept of moving, much prefers sitting having cuddles, so she will only begrudgingly show off this new amazing trick to people but we can definitely say she did it!!! She just needs to keep crawling crawling crawling (sung in the tune of Limp Bizkits rolling rolling rolling).

Here's to many more milestones.

First Tooth

I'm kind of sad to say that another one of those firsts has been and gone. On April the 9th Layla got her first tooth, then yesterday she quickly got her 2nd tooth and by the way she is behaving today I think the 3rd one is already on it's way!!

Now to start attempting to brush her teeth. Although she is my 4th child, I have never learnt the trick to getting little ones to let you brush their teeth. Does anyone have any tried and tested methods?? What about toothbrushes, can anyone recommend any good ones??
