Wakey, Wakey, Elephant! Book Review

I love reading books with my children, especially when they include things to be learnt, whether that be dealing with emotions or particular situations. Now Wakey, Wakey, Elephant! might not appear to be that type of story but as the tale progresses I think you'll be just as surprised as I was.

WAKEY, WAKEY, ELEPHANT! yells Edgar. But his elephant just keeps snoozing. Edgar tickles him with a feather. He invites a marching band to parade through Elephant's room. His friend stays asleep. Can you guess what Edgar finally whispers in Elephant's ear to get him right out of bed?

Now I've never had to wake up a sleeping elephant before but I have had to get my children out of bed for school so I can definitely sympathise with Edgar's dilemma. In this case Elephant seems to be dreaming deeply and what does an elephant dream about? Well peanuts of course!

Edgar tries all sorts of different methods to stir Elephant from his slumber, a flock of roosters cock-a-doodle-doing in his ear doesn't manage to wake him, the bang as balloons pop didn't make him move an inch. even a full blown party can't tempt him to open his eyes.

As I read the story to my 5 year old I asked her how she might wake someone up and she thought a good plan would be to jump on them, I suppose this could work but it could also result in some unwanted injuries.

The illustrations that accompany this tale make it rather entertaining. And if I'm honest I was drawn in instantly by the front cover because it just said 'friendship' to me. It gave off a warm and inviting vibe and I wasn't wrong in my assumption.

What is shown as you read is the concept of patience because we as adults know that there will be many moments in our life time when we are made to wait, this can be hard at times but sometimes that wait can be worth it.

Having made it this far through my review I bet you're wondering just what finally got Elephant to leave his bed. Lets just say it was a big surprise, a surprise that demonstrates friendship perfectly and I think what also comes across is that friends can be made with the most unlikely of candidates.

Wakey, Wakey, Elephant! is a charming picture book that will probably have your child wishing that they could have an elephant to call their friend too. A book filled with fun, laughter and kindness, a real joy to read.
