First Act Discovery Ukulele - Review and GIveaway

When I was younger my musical talents didn't manage to stretch further than twinkle twinkle little star on the keyboard and an ok version of three blind mice on the recorder. It's not that I don't like music, I love listening to other people play their instruments, I just wasn't blessed with the musical genes. My little brother on the other hand is actually quite good, he plays the bass guitar in his own band and is quite the dab hand with his ukulele.

Now my kids all adore their uncle and all look up to him in a their own way and when I was asked if I'd like to review the First Act Discovery Ukulele, it was my eight year old who jumped for joy and proclaimed that her Uncle Alec could teach her how to play. And if that wasn't enough, it turns out that her teacher is also a really talented ukulele player and she recently bought in her instrument to school to demonstrate just how fun it is to make songs with.

The First Act Ukulele isn't a 'toy' instrument, it is the real thing. It comes complete with:

* Black with Blue Stars design (also available in white and blue butterfly design)
* Soprano Ukulele
* Traditional soprano-sized body with great sound.
* Easy to play nylon strings
* Tuneable, with guitar-style tuning gears

And the best part, no batteries required!

With real guitar style tuning gears, when you get your ukulele out of the box you do actually need to tune it properly before you can begin strumming away on it. I'll admit that I had absolutely no clue on how to tune the ukulele so sent my daughter into school to ask her teacher really nicely if she could do it for us, which luckily she was more than happy to do.

Once the ukulele was tuned I had a little search around and managed to find an app on my phone that allows for easy tuning which shows you exactly which string to strum and it turns green when you've managed to hit the right note.

One thing I've always struggled with when learning to play an instrument is the fact that I'm left handed and a lot of the time things tend to get taught the right handed way, this is also why I could never teach someone to play an instrument myself and also why I left it to Youtube to show my daughter just where to begin when the ukulele had finally been tuned.

She actually picked up basic notes quite easily and was most eager to show us all her successes and to explain what each of the notes were and just where to find them, it was really lovely to see her so determined to learn something. The sound really is authentic and it makes for a great beginner instrument and at £14.99 it's very reasonably priced.

I've now suggested that she tries to learn a Christmas song that she can duet on with her uncle when he comes home for the holidays,
